Diese Norm bietet eine Schnittstelle für Anwendungsprogramme für die Erzeugung und Darstellung dreidimensionaler Graphiken. Darüberhinaus ermöglicht das 3D-GKS-Eingabemodell, Punkte und Linien im dreidimensionalen Raum darzustellen. Zusätzlich wird auch die Möglichkeit der permanenten Speicherung dreidimensionaler Bilder auf Dateien (Metafiles) ermöglicht.
