Diese Europäische Norm legt sicherheitstechnische Anforderungen und deren Prüfung für Gestaltung und Konstruktion von Schraubenmaschinen mit horizontal angeordneter Schraube für Einmann-Bedienung zum Spalten von Holz, unabhängig von der Art der Antriebsenergie, fest. An kombinierten Brennholzkreissägemaschinen/Holzspaltmaschinen wird nur der Spaltmaschinenteil der Maschine durch diese Norm erfasst. Für Brennholzkreissägemaschinen siehe prEN 1870-6:1997. Die Norm beschreibt Maßnahmen zur Vermeidung oder Verminderung der sich aus dem Gebrauch dieser Maschinen ergebenden Risiken.
