ISO 11064-1 enthält ergonomische Grundsätze, Empfehlungen und Anforderungen, die sowohl bei der Auslegung von Leitzentralen als auch bei der Erweiterung, Erneuerung und technisch bedingter Verbesserungen von Leitzentralen anzuwenden sind. ISO 11064-1 behandelt sämtliche Arten von Leitzentralen, die üblicherweise in der Prozessführung, in Steuersystemen für Transport und Logistik sowie für Personenleit- und -meldesysteme eingesetzt werden (siehe Anhang A). Obwohl diese Internationale Norm in erster Linie für ortsfeste Leitzentralen vorgesehen ist, können viele der Grundsätze für ortsveränderliche Leitzentralen, wie auf Schiffen und in Flugzeugen, wichtig und anwendbar sein.
