Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Verfahren für die gravimetrische Bestimmung des Wassergehalts von Böden als Volumenanteil fest. Dieses Verfahren kann auf alle Arten von nicht-quellschrumpfenden Böden angewendet werden, die mit Stechzylindern beprobt werden können. Das Verfahren ist nicht anwendbar bei Böden mit Steinen, starken Wurzeln oder anderen Einflüssen, die die Entnahme von Bodenkernen verhindern. Es kann als Referenzverfahren verwendet werden (z. B. für die Kalibrierung indirekter Verfahren zur Bestimmung des Wassergehaltes).
