Das Wissen um die spektralen Eigenschaften eines Lasers, zum Beispiel die Peak-Wellenlänge und die spektrale Linienbreite, ist wichtig für mögliche Anwendungen (zB Interferometrie, Litographie). In der ÖNORM sind die wesentlichen Parameter zur Beschreibung der spektralen Eigenschaften von Lasern definiert. Die ÖNORM enthält weiters Richtlinien zur Messung dieser Parameter. Da die geforderte Messgenauigkeit von der möglichen Laseranwendung abhängt, sind drei Genauigkeitsklassen angegeben. Ebenso ist eine Berichtsvorlage angeführt, um die Darstellung der Messergebnisse zu vereinheitlichen.
