Diese Internationale Norm legt das Verfahren und die Messbedingungen für die Bestimmung des Faserdurchmessers von Wolle mittels Projektionsmikroskop fest. Das Verfahren ist sowohl für Wollfasern in beliebiger Form als auch für andere Fasern mit einigermaßen kreisrundem Querschnitt geeignet. (Bei gefärbten, gebleichten oder ausgerüsteten Fasern könnte sich der Durchmesser vom Durchmesser nicht behandelter Fasern unterscheiden. Die bei verschiedenen Verarbeitungsstufen an einer Wollpartie erzielten Schätzungen des Faserdurchmessers sind nicht notwendigerweise identisch.)
