Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Prüfverfahren zum Bestimmen der Viskosität von technischen Cellulosenitrat-Lösungen, üblicherweise auch als Collodiumwolle bezeichnet, deren Stickstoffgehalt je nach Typ zwischen 10,7 % und 12,6 % (Massenanteil) liegen kann, fest. Sie beschreibt auch ein System zur Einteilung von technischem Cellulosenitrat (siehe Anhang A), welches auf der Viskositätsmessung nach diesem Verfahren beruht. Die Verwendung eines genormten Verfahrens führt zu Normtypen und verhindert unterschiedliche Einteilungen, bedingt durch vielfältige Arten von Viskositätsmessungen und eine Vielzahl von möglichen Lösemitteln.
