Diese Norm legt Anforderungen an dekorative Nickel-, Nickel-Chrom- und Kupfer-Nickel-Chrom-Überzüge fest, die auf Eisen, Stahl, Zinklegierungen, Kupfer und Kupferlegierungen und auf Aluminium und Aluminiumlegierungen abgeschieden werden, um Aussehen und Korrosionsbeständigkeit zu verbessern. Bezeichnungen der Überzüge werden festgelegt, die sich in Dicke und Art unterscheiden, und es wird ein Leitfaden für die Auswahl der geeigneten Bezeichnung gegeben, in Abhängigkeit von der Beanspruchungsstufe, der der beschichtete Artikel ausgesetzt wird. Diese Norm legt keine Anforderungen an die Oberflächenbeschaffenheit des Grundmetalls vor der Abscheidung fest und gilt nicht für galvanische Überzüge auf Blechen, Bändern oder Draht in unbearbeiteter Form (Halbzeug) und nicht für Verbindungselemente mit Gewinde oder Spiralfedern. Diese überarbeitete Norm schließt ISO 1458 ein. Anforderungen an dekorative, galvanische Kupfer-Nickel-Chrom-Überzüge auf Kunststoffen werden in ISO 4525 festgelegt. ISO 4526 und ISO 6158 legen Anforderungen an galvanische Nickel- bzw. Chromüberzüge für technische Zwecke fest.
