Diese Internationale Norm legt Techniken der Wirbelstromprüfung für den Nachweis von Oberflächenfehlern und oberflächennahen rissartigen Unregelmäßigkeiten hauptsächlich in ferritischen Werkstoffen (Schweißnähte, Wärmeeinflusszone, Grundmetall) fest. Die Wirbelstromprüfung kann auch für nichtferritische Werkstoffe festgelegt werden, z. B. in einer Anwendungsnorm. Die Techniken können bei beschichteten oder unbeschichteten Prüfgegenständen während der Herstellung und im Betrieb, Onshore und Offshore, verwendet werden. Die Wirbelstromprüfung kann an allen zugänglichen Oberflächen von Schweißverbindungen in beinahe jeder Ausführung durchgeführt werden. Wenn nichts anderes zu speziellen Punkten in dieser Internationalen Norm festgelegt ist, gelten die allgemeinen Grundsätze von ISO 15549.
