Dieser Teil von ISO 18314 legt ein Verfahren zum Bestimmen der Farbwertanteile einer Beschichtung fest. Dieses Verfahren ist nur auf Beschichtungen anwendbar, die bei Untersuchung mit normalem Sehvermögen aus einer gleichmäßigen Farbe zu bestehen scheinen, d. h. monochromatisch sind. Beschichtungen, die ein nicht-durchsichtiges Substrat nicht völlig abdecken, stellen ein undurchsichtiges System dar und können mithilfe des Vorgehens dieses Teiles von ISO 18314 gemessen werden. Lumineszierende Beschichtungen, durchsichtige Beschichtungen und durchscheinende Beschichtungen (zum Beispiel für Display- oder Lampenglas), retroreflektierende Beschichtungen (zum Beispiel für Ver-kehrsschilder) und metallische Überzüge fallen nicht in den Anwendungsbereich dieses Teiles von ISO 18314.
