Diese Internationale Norm legt ein zerstörendes Verfahren zum Bestimmen der Trockenschichtdicke fest, bei dem eine definiert erzeugte Schichtverletzung mikroskopisch ausgewertet wird. Das Verfahren ist für nahezu alle Schicht-Substrat-Kombinationen geeignet und lässt auch die Bestimmung der Einzelschichtdicken von Beschichtungssystemen zu. Das Verfahren kann in folgenden Fällen nicht oder nur bedingt angewendet werden: - zu weiche und/oder elastische Beschichtungen (es kann kein erkennbarer Ritz oder erkennbares Bohrloch wahrgenommen werden); - harte (nicht anritzbare/anbohrbare) oder zu weiche und/oder elastische Substrate; - zu geringer optischer Kontrast zwischen Beschichtung und Substrat; - Schichtdicken, die größer sind als die Schärfentiefe des Messmikroskops.
