Diese Internationale Norm beschreibt ein System, das die Position des Implanatkörpers im Kiefer bezeichnet und das zur Anwendung mit dem in ISO 3950 beschriebenen Schema vorgesehen ist. Es zeigt nicht selbst an, ob das Produkt in der Mundhöhle sichtbar ist oder das Vorhandensein transmukosaler Bestandteile oder Implantatrestaurationen. Weil das System Positionen beschreibt, jedoch keine Restaurationsformen, ist es nicht notwendig die Quadranten Bezeichnungsnummern 5 bis 8, die angewandt werden, um einen Milchzahn anzugeben, zu verwenden. Diese Angaben sollten vom zuständigen Kliniker in der Patientenakte aufgezeichnet werden und vom/von den Kliniker(n) der die Behandlung durchführt dem Patienten zur Verfügung gestellt werden.
