Dieser Teil der ISO 20765 legt ein Verfahren zur Berechnung der volumetrischen und energetischen Eigenschaften von Erdgasen, Erdgasen mit synthetischen Beimischungen und ähnlichen Gemischen, bei Bedingungen, unter denen das Gemisch nur als Gas existieren kann, fest. Das Verfahren ist anwendbar auf Gase mit Pipeline-Qualität innerhalb der Druckbereiche, p, und der Temperatur, T, bei welchen Übertragung und Vertrieb üblicherweise stattfinden. Für volumetrische Eigenschaften (Realgasfaktor und Dichte) liegt die Unsicherheit der Berechnung bei etwa ±0,1 % (95 % Vertrauensbereich). Für energetische Eigenschaften (z. B. für Enthalpie, Wärmekapazität, Joule-Thom-son-Koeffizient, Schallgeschwindigkeit), ist die Unsicherheit der Berechnung üblicherweise höher.
