Diese Norm beschreibt ein Prüfverfahren zur Bestimmung der relativen Entflammbarkeit von Flüssigkeiten beim Auftreffen auf heiße, metallische Oberflächen bei einer fest eingestellten Temperatur. Durch Anpassung der Oberflächentemperatur besteht ebenfalls die Möglichkeit, die Zündtemperatur von Flüssigkeiten anzuzeigen. Die Hauptanwendung besteht in der Bewertung der Zündhemmung schwerentflammbarer Druckflüssigkeiten, welche durch Definition schwer entzündbar sind. Diese Norm kann auch für andere Typen entflammbarer Flüssigkeiten bei niedrigeren Oberflächentemperaturen angewendet werden. Dabei ist jedoch mit einem deutlich zunehmenden Anstieg der Brandgefahr während der Prüfung zu rechnen.
