Diese Norm legt ein energiedispersives Röntgenfluoreszenz-Verfahren zur Bestimmung des Schwefelgehalts von Autokraftstoffen, d.h. von Ottokraftstoffen mit bis zu 2,7 % (m/m) Sauerstoffanteil sowie von Dieselkraftstoffen mit bis zu 5 % (V/V) Fettsäuremethylester (FAME), mit Schwefelanteilen im Bereich von 30 mg/kg bis 500 mg/kg fest. Andere Produkte mit anderen Schwefelgehalten können mit diesem Prüfverfahren ebenfalls untersucht werden, jedoch sind weder für andere Produkte als Automobilkraftstoffe sowie für andere Schwefelgehalte für diese Norm Präzisionsangaben ermittelt worden. Aufgrund spektraler Überlappungen ist diese Norm auf verbleite Motorbenzine und Bleiersatz-Benzine mit 8 mg/kg Kalium bis 20 mg/kg Kalium und auf Produkte und Raffinerie-Einsatzprodukte, die Blei, Silizium, Phosphor, Calcium, Kalium oder Halogene in Konzentrationen von mehr als einem Zehntel des gemessenen Schwefelgehaltes enthalten, nicht anwendbar.
