Dieses Dokument legt ein Verfahren für die Zählung von Enterobacteriaceae fest. Es ist anwendbar auf - Produkte, die für den menschlichen Verzehr oder als Futtermittel bestimmt sind sowie - Umgebungsproben im Bereich der Primärproduktion, der Herstellung von Lebensmitteln und beim Umgang mit Lebensmitteln. Dieses Verfahren ist für Fälle vorgesehen, bei denen erwartet wird, dass die Anzahl der gesuchten Kolonien mehr als 100 je Milliliter oder je Gramm der Untersuchungsprobe beträgt. Das Verfahren der wahrscheinlichsten Keimzahl (MPN, en: most probable number), wie in ISO 21528-1 enthalten, wird im Allgemeinen angewandt, wenn davon auszugehen ist, dass die gesuchte Anzahl im Bereich von unter 100 je Milliliter oder je Gramm der Untersuchungsprobe liegt.
