Sie dient dem Ziel, Konstrukteure und Werkstofftechniker mit Informationen zu versorgen, die zum Festlegen von Werkstoffen notwendig sind, aus denen Teile ausschließlich durch Metallpulverspritzguss (MIM) herzustellen sind. Diese Norm darf nicht auf Konstruktionsteile angewendet werden, die nach anderen pulvermetallurgischen Verfahren hergestellt werden, wie z. B. Presssinter- und Pulverschmiedetechniken.
