Dieses Dokument legt die allgemeinen Anforderungen an die Sauerstoff-Index (OI)-Prüfung fest, die weitergehend in ISO 4589-2 und ISO 4589-3 wie folgt beschrieben werden: - ISO 4589-2 beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung des minimalen Volumenanteils an Sauerstoff in einem Gemisch aus Sauerstoff und Stickstoff, das bei einer Temperatur von (23 ± 2) °C zugegeben wird und die Verbrennung eines Werkstoffes unter festgelegten Prüfbedingungen gerade noch unterstützt; - ISO 4589-3 beschreibt Verfahren, mit denen die gleiche Bestimmung über einen Temperaturbereich durchgeführt werden kann, der üblicherweise zwischen 25 °C und 150 °C liegt (obwohl Temperaturen bis zu 400 °C angewendet werden können).
