Diese Internationale Norm legt Verfahren für die Vorbereitung einer Probe aus einem oder mehreren Sinterteilen aus Materialien fest, die auf den ungebundenen oder gesamten Kohlenstoffgehalt zu analysieren sind. Gebundener Kohlenstoff wird als Differenz zwischen dem gesamten und dem ungebundenen Kohlenstoff bestimmt. Diese Norm enthält die Vorbereitung von Proben für die Bestimmung des Kohlenstoffes durch ein chemisches Verfahren, d. h. Verbrennung in Sauerstoff und Messung des auftretenden Kohlendioxids nach ISO 437. Sie enthält nicht die Vorbereitung von Proben für die Bestimmung des Kohlenstoffes durch physikalische Verfahren, wie z. B. Metallographie oder Spektroskopie.
