Diese Norm legt die Werkstoff- und Gebrauchsanforderungen sowie Prüfverfahren für Essbestecke (Messer, Gabeln, Löffel, Serviersets, Schöpflöffel, Kinderbestecke und andere Servierbestecke) fest. Die Norm ist für Bestecke aus nichtrostendem Stahl und versilbertem Neusilber (Kupfer-Nickel-Zink-Legierung) oder versilbertem nichtrostendem Stahl anwendbar. Sie gilt nicht für Bestecke ganz aus Edelmetall, Aluminium, unlegiertem Stahl oder für Bestecke, die vollständig aus Neusilber bestehen oder vergoldet oder verchromt sind. Für versilberte Essbestecke sind drei Mindestschichtdicken von Silber festgelegt.
