Dieser Teil von ISO 9117 legt ein Verfahren zum Bestimmen des Trockengrades (siehe Tabelle 1) von Beschichtungen einschließlich Mehrschichtsystemen fest. Er gestattet ferner, die Trocknungsgeschwindigkeit zu beurteilen. Die Bestimmung der Trockengrade 4 bis 7 nach dieser Norm ist bei plastischen Beschichtungen nur bedingt möglich, da das plastisch-elastische Verhalten dieser Beschichtungen durch die vorübergehend sichtbare Veränderung der Beschichtungsoberfläche nicht beurteilt werden kann.
