Diese Norm legt ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung des chemischen Sauerstoffbedarfs (ST-CSB) als Küvettentest fest. Das Verfahren ist empirisch und anwendbar auf Wasserproben jeder Art; dies schließt Abwasser mit ein. Das Verfahren wird auf unverdünnte Proben angewendet, deren ST-CSB-Gehalt bis zu 1000 mg/l und deren Chlorid-Konzentration höchstens 1000 mg/l beträgt. Proben mit höheren ST-CSB-Werten werden vor der Analyse verdünnt. Bei Proben mit geringerem CSB führt dies zu einer Verringerung der Messgenauigkeit. Die Bestimmungsgrenze wird ebenfalls herabgesenkt. Proben mit einer hohen Chloridkonzentration sollten auf Chloridkonzentrationen von etwa 1000 mg/l oder weniger vorverdünnt werden.
