Dieser Teil der ISO 16000 ist dazu gedacht, die Innenraumluft zu charakterisieren, wobei die einzusetzende Probenahmestrategie in ISO 16000-2 beschrieben ist. Er ist anwendbar für Formaldehyd und andere Carbonylverbindungen und wurde für 14 Aldhyde und Ketone getestet. Formaldehyd ist die einfachste Carbonylverbindung mit einem Kohlenstoff-, einem Sauerstoff- und zwei Wasserstoffatomen. In der monomolekularen Form ist er ein farbloses, stechend riechendes, reaktives Gas. Er wird in der Produktion von Harnstoff-Formaldehyd-Harzen, Klebern und Isolierschäumen eingesetzt. Emissionen aus Spanplatten und Wandisolierungen sind die Hauptquellen für Formaldehyd in der Innenraumluft.
