ÖNORM ISO 17289 legt ein optisches Verfahren zur Bestimmung von gelöstem Sauerstoff in Wasser mit einem Sensor fest, der auf der Grundlage der Fluoreszenzlöschung arbeitet. Die Messung kann entweder als Sauerstoffkonzentration in Milligramm pro Liter, als prozentuale Sättigung (% gelöster Sauerstoff) oder als beides erfolgen. Je nach verwendetem Gerät können nach Angaben des Herstellers Nachweisgrenzen von 0,1 mg/l oder 0,2 mg/l erreicht werden. Die meisten Geräte erlauben die Messung von Werten über 100 %, d. h. von Übersättigung.
