Norma stanovuje požadované hodnoty zvukovej izolácie pre deliace konštrukcie medzi miestnosťami v budovách a na zvukovú izoláciu obvodových plášťov budov vrátane okien a dverí. Požadované hodnoty sú stanovené s ohľadom na funkciu miestnosti a hluk v susednom priestore. Táto norma tiež stanovuje zásady na navrhovanie obytných a občianskych budov z hľadiska stavebnej akustiky. Ďalej táto norma v prílohe A konkretizuje akustické vlastnosti, ktoré charakterizujú základnú technickú požiadavku na posudzovanie zhody a schopnosť stavebných výrobkov plniť v stavbách funkciu ochrany pred hlukom. V prílohe D je uvedený zoznam s výkladom niektorých pojmov na účely posudzovania zvukovej izolácie v budovách. Túto normu je potrebné používať v nadväznosti na STN EN ISO 717-1 a STN EN ISO 717-2 a v nadväznosti na platné normy radu STN EN ISO 140 a radu STN EN ISO 10140.
