Táto európska norma platí pre bezpečnosť elektrických spotrebičov pre domácnosť a na komerčné účely, ktorých menovité napätie nepresahuje 250 V pri jednofázových spotrebičoch a 480 V pri ostatných spotrebičoch. Spotrebiče a stroje určené na používanie odborníkmi alebo vyškolenými používateľmi v obchodoch, v ľahkom priemysle alebo na farmách, a spotrebiče a stroje, ktoré sú deklarované na komerčné používanie laikmi, patria do predmetu tejto normy.
