Předmětem této normy jsou: a) definice stupňů ochran krytem elektrických zařízení z hlediska: 1. ochrany osob před dotykem nebezpečných částí uvnitř krytu; 2. ochrany zařízení uvnitř krytu před vniknutím pevných cizích těles; 3. ochrany zařízení uvnitř krytu před škodlivými účinky způsobenými vniknutím vody. b) označování těchto stupňů ochrany; c) požadavky pro jednotlivá označení; d) zkoušky stanovené k prověření, zda kryty splňují požadavky této normy.
