Podle zásad této normy se řídí provoz údržba a revize ochrany proti korozi kovových potrubí a kabelů s kovovým pláštěm, uloženým v zemi a v povrchových vodách, pokud pro některá zařízení neplatí předpisy přísnější. Tato norma neplatí pro litinová potrubí, která nejsou opatřena izolací podle ČSN 03 8375 (čl. 63). Norma stanoví přesné podmínky pro kontrolu provozu, pro údržbu zařízení ochrany proti korozi, dokumenty provozu a údržby, revize zařízení aktivní ochrany a v dodatku celou řadu souvisících technických norem a předpisů, většinou technického charakteru. ČSN 03 8373 byla schválena 15.3.1976 a nabyla účinnosti od 1.12.1977
