Norma je zaměřena především na ochranu betonových a železobetonových konstrukcí, zejména ochrany proti pronikání vody a solných roztoků do betonu. Norma uvádí zkušební metody pro hodnocení účinku hydrofobní impregnace na rychlost absorpce vody impregnovaným betonem a odolnosti impregnace účinkům alkálií. Podstatou zkoušky je porovnání rychlosti absorpce vody impregnovaných a neimpregnovaných zkušebních těles. Norma definuje absorpční poměr jako poměr obou rychlostí. Dlouhodobá trvanlivost je stanovena měřením absorpce vody po vystavení zkušebního tělesa vlivu alkálií.
