Norma specifikuje způsob uvádění technických požadavků v normách na kovové a jiné anorganické povlaky. Cílem je sjednotit vypracovávání technických norem a stanovit normalizovaný způsob označování povlaků. Norma platí pro mezinárodní normy na povlaky vyloučené elektrolyticky, autokatalyticky a napařováním. Neplatí pro žárově stříkané ani pro smaltové povlaky.
