Norma popisuje měřicí metody, aplikovatelné na optoelektronická polovodičová zařízení, která se používají v optických digitálních systémech a subsystémech. Při měření lze použít optická vlákna a kabely, definované v souboru IEC 60793 a souboru IEC 60794. Jestliže je pigtail zakončen optickým konektorem, lze použít optické konektory, definované v souboru IEC 60874.
