Účelem této části EN 720 je definovat vlastnosti plynů čtyřmi základními fyzikálně-chemickými kritérii tj. hořlavostí, toxicitou, stavem plynu a žíravostí, korozivitou (viz kapitola 3) pro účely výběru vhodných výstupních ventilových připojení. Předkládá seznam plynů (s kódem FTSC), který nepřímo navazuje na existující dvě Směrnice, které se výrazně zabývají klasifikací plynů - směrnice k nebezpečným látkám a přípravkům a další se zabývá přepravou nebezpečného zboží (ADR).
