Norma se zabývá vlastnostmi, přípravou a charakterizací certifikovaných referenčních materiálů a uvádí pravidla pro jejich názvy a popis v podpůrné dokumentaci. Podobnou problematikou se zabývala ČSN EN 12287:1999 (85 0307) Zdravotnické prostředky pro diagnostiku in vittro - Měření veličin ve vzorcích biologického původu - Popis referenčních materiálů. Norma obsahuje 2 přílohy, z nichž první pojednává o certifikovaných referenčních materiálech se jmenovitými vlastnostmi a řadovými veličinami. Druhá příloha uvádí vzájemný vztah mezi touto normou a základními požadavky Směrnice EU 98/79/EC.
