Norma stanoví požadavky na psací látky a vybavení, které lze používat při tvorbě papírových dokumentů se stabilními a stálými zobrazeními, tj. zobrazeními, jejichž vlastnosti, mající vliv na možnosti kopírování nebo konvertování papírových dokumentů na jiné datové nosiče se budou měnit málo nebo vůbec. Norma specifikuje požadavky na zkušební metody, které hodnotí stabilitu zobrazení. Některé vlastnosti zobrazení, např. odolnost proti otěru, závisejí na kombinaci zobrazení a papíru. Zkušební podmínky jsou vybrány tak, aby umožnily získat výsledky reprezentující většinu papírů na trhu, užívaných pro jednotlivé zobrazovací procesy
